hello, I’m Alice, and I’m a writer. I write books, and I’ve written a lot of articles, but this newsletter sits somewhere between the two: a space dedicated to the essential, fleeting meat and matter of life that is all too often overlooked. The nostalgic, sugary rush of the sweets you eat only in the car, or what it is to see your life in a painting made 150 years ago, or the confounding, stifling freedom that comes with sending your child to nursery.
I created savour because I felt constrained. I’ve been a journalist since I was nineteen, and while I still consider myself fortunate to pay my bills with words I was increasingly conscious that I wanted to write ones that didn’t fit neatly into the boxes you might find in a magazine or newspaper. I wanted to write about the taste of salt in the air on the wind-rushed western coast of Ireland, or what makes a particularly good kitchen song. I wanted to write notes on the delicious things in life, to pull them apart like a soft, fresh ball of mozzarella and relish what they were made of. I wanted to document my experience of life in these smallest of moments to live more meaningfully.
That was a couple of years ago now, and it seems that I’m not alone: thousands of you savour with me every week.
how it works
savour works in a couple of predictable ways: one weekly letter, sent at Wednesdays at 1pm GMT and one digest - savourites - sent on the first Friday of the month at 1pm GMT. The Wednesday letters like to zoom in close while savourites likes to pan out, delivering you with tasty little morsels for the weekend. Spontaneity is something to be savoured, too, so every now and then I’ll put out something special.
Most of my content is paywalled. It wasn’t always this way, but over the past few months I’ve come to realise that I write better when I’m paid for it. Paying members get access to everything I send out, the extensive archive which you can explore on my homepage and, perhaps best of all, free access to community events and retreats. Paying £50 a year, or £5 a month, keeps all of this possible.
